Peregrine Baristas Headed to USBC

Peregrine Espresso is excited to announce that we are sending two of our baristas to compete in the United States Barista Championship (USBC) taking place April 19-22 in Portland, Oregon. In just a few days, Travis Beckett and Lindsey Kiser will compete against more than 50 baristas from around the country to claim the title of 2012 United States Barista Champion and to represent the U.S. in the World Barista Championship in June.

The USBC, hosted each year by the Specialty Coffee Association of America (SCAA), encourages and recognizes professional achievement in the art and skill of espresso beverage preparation and service.
Prior to the USBC, SCAA hosts 6 regional barista competitions all across the country. Any regional competitor can apply to compete in the USBC, with regional winners getting an automatic bid to compete. During their 15 minute performance time, competitors prepare and serve 12 espresso-based drinks: 4 espressos, 4 cappuccinos, and 4 signature beverages for a panel of 7 judges. Competitors are judged on the quality of their drinks as well as their technical skills, coffee knowledge and professionalism.

Travis and Lindsey have been with Peregrine Espresso at our Eastern Market location for 2.5 and 3.5 years respectively and both competed in 2011. At this year’s regional competition in Atlanta, Lindsey took top honors, earning the title of 2012 Southeast Regional Barista Champion. Since the regional, Travis and Lindsey have each logged over 100 hours of practice time in preparation for the USBC. According to Lindsey, “Preparations have been challenging but rewarding and I hope they allow me to put forth a great effort in representing the Southeast region.” In addition to perfecting their espressos and cappuccinos, each competitor must also develop an espresso-based signature drink. Travis’s drink for USBC is an iced Idido sundried coffee charged with nitrous oxide, served with an espresso, barley malt, and blueberry float. Lindsey is serving a coconut milk, passion fruit, and espresso beverage served with a side of ginger cotton candy. Travis is “really excited to explore different ways of presenting coffee with the judges.”
