  1. Good news. Good luck. Bad name — 6 syllables is too long.

Drop the “Espresso,” just call it “Peregrine.” Even “Peregrine Coffee” is pushing it.

My heart pounded a bit as I read my first criticism as a business owner. But the more I thought about it, the more I thought of some of my favorite coffee and food places on this earth: Espresso Vivace in Seattle, Intelligentsia Coffee in Chicago/LA, Ritual Coffee Roasters in San Francisco, Woodberry Kitchen in Baltimore, Cafe Atlantico here in DC. All could be seen as a mouthful, but they become Vivace, Intelli, Ritual, etc, by the faithful.

I would have no problem if our customers called us “peregrine.” But I’m sticking with six syllables on the sign–if it worked for Intelligentsia, I’ll take my chances.

  3. Woo-hoo! Congratulations Ryan, I look forward to seeing you behind the counter pulling a divine espresso.

FWIW, when I first saw the name I immediately thought of a peregrine falcon; all bad ass and eating other animals and shit.

  4. Congrats on the open!

  5. Congratulations Ryan and Jill.

Please let me know if we can help out in any way.

  6. Congrats, Ryan and Jill! Can’t wait to see the new shop. I dig the name, too.

  7. Congrats, Ryan! It’s nice to see great coffee back on Capitol Hill—I know my area friends are thirsty for a fix of the good stuff!

A sixth-grade classmate took the name of St. Peregrine for his confirmation name (Catholic name-appending stuff)….we all razzed him about it, but I loved the meaning. Glad to see it pop up again.

    Ryan and Jill!

I love the name and the meaning behind it. Can’t wait to come and visit the place, cous. I know it will be a huge success. We are really proud of you both.

  9. Congrats guys!! Best of luck!

  10. Way to Go Ryan! I hope for a smooth road ahead for the Peregrine and by extension, the Jensens. I can’t wait for the east coast’s newest expression of coffee zen. Let us know when the machine is in and we can help “calibrate”!

  11. JPA… Just Plain Awesome.

  12. AMAZING. I’m incredibly excited to make it up to see the place. It will be amazing to see your wealth of experience put to practice…this is going to be goooooooood.

We could not be happier for you, Ryan and Jill! So glad you’re putting down roots in DC! Yay! Hooray! The more of your own personality you put into Peregrine, the more it will rock.
