First off, we are pleased to share that on Sunday, November 13, Peregrine Espresso took home the Hilly for Best Coffeeshop on Capitol Hill for the second consecutive year. We are thankful for our neighbors on Capitol Hill and look forward to many more years serving all of you.

Second, you may be wondering what our plans are for Thanksgiving. We are going to be open from 7-12 at both shops on Thanksgiving morning and resume normal hours on Friday. Please stop by and pick up some coffee to accompany your pumpkin pie and treat your guests to some of Aida Batlle’s wonderful coffees from El Salvador. We are particularly loving the Finca Tanzania Pacamara for some nice sweet/savory combo and Finca Mauritania Sundried if you’re looking for a punch of berries during these dark days.

Speaking of Aida Batlle, The New Yorker recently featured a great article on her which you can find here. We’ve been serving her coffees since we opened over three years ago and are proud to have been serving only coffees from her farms for the month of November, including a fantastic Pulp Natural espresso from Finca Mauritania.

We’ll start by tasting some of the different lots of coffee from the Cinco de Junio co-op, followed by a discussion of the Fabretto Children’s Foundation work in Las Sabanas, Nicaragua where Cinco de Junio is located. Come learn more of the story behind this tasty coffee and the farmers of the Cinco de Junio co-op.

This event is free and open to anyone.

Peregrine Espresso is pleased to announce the expansion of our one-of-a-kind Pedaler by Peregrine coffee delivery program to include our new neighbors in Northwest D.C. Anyone who lives or works by one of our stores can have fresh roasted whole bean coffee delivered by bike right to their door.

Every Thursday our Pedaler by Peregrine bike heads out stocked with Counter Culture Coffee seasonal coffees and espressos to be delivered to our customers. The weekly coffee selection is accompanied by a detailed biography allowing customers to explore the story behind the coffee including information about the producer as well as in-depth tasting notes. The delivery service is now available to any home, office or business between Columbia Road and H Street NW, bordered on the east by 7th Street NW and on the west by Rock Creek Parkway. Delivery is also available in the Capitol Hill neighborhood between H Street NE and M Street SE, bordered on the east by the Anacostia River and the west by the Capitol building.

“At Peregrine Espresso, we serve the freshest and highest quality coffees available. The idea behind the Pedaler program is to allow our customers that same delicious coffee experience even if they can’t make it into the shop, ” says Ryan Jensen, Peregrine’s owner.

Peregrine’s newly launched webstore provides a one-stop shop for signing up for Pedaler as well as purchasing other coffee brewing equipment, supplies and gift cards. In order to ensure our customers continue to have tasty coffee experiences at home or work, each new Pedaler customer will receive a coupon they can use online or in-store towards the purchase of coffee brewing equipment. Throughout the fall, spot our delivery bike around town and send us a photo tweet or follow the QR code to receive a discount on your first Pedaler order.

Since Counter Culture’s Sustainability and Producer Relations Manager, Kim Elena Bullock first visited Las Sabanas in 2009, the 140 families of the Cinco de Junio co-op have worked hard to improve the quality of their coffee with each harvest. To help achieve this end, the co-op offers farmers a place to learn about optimal farming practices, such as soil composting and organic farming. As coffee farming constitutes the majority of the economy in and around Las Sabanas, the co-op also works to give back to the community through it’s Corporate Social Responsibility program.

The Cinco de Junio co-op formally started working with the Fabretto Children’s Foundation when the two organizations teamed up in 2009 to work on strategies to improve the cooperative’s administration and production strategies. Fabretto has been working in the northern highlands of Nicaragua for over many years, fulfilling their mission to “enable impoverished Nicaraguan children and their families in underserved communities break the cycle of poverty and reach their full potential through programs promoting nutrition, health, education, community and character development.” They run a number of health and education programs, including a rural secondary program, and vocational training in remote, rural communities near the Honduran border. Fabretto also works specifically in the elementary schools in Las Sabanas, supplementing the half day of Nicaraguan public school the government provides students with extracurricular activities and a nutritious lunch. Not only do the children of Las Sabanas (many whose families belong to the co-op) get a more complete education, the nutrition they receive from the school lunches is a vital supplement to their diets in a region where many children are chronically malnourished.
The Fabretto Children’s Foundation and the Cinco de Junio co-op are each essential to the support system within the Las Sabanas community. Peregrine is proud to support Fabretto by donating $0.25 from each cup and $1 from each bag of Cinco de Junio sold. The money raised will help pay the teachers who run the extracurricular elementary programs. This is the first year Counter Culture has sold Cinco de Junio as a single-origin coffee so we’re especially excited to be able to highlight the co-op’s coffee with this project.

Both Jeremy and Lindsey competed in the Southeast Regional Competition in February, placing 3rd and 5th respectively.  We are super proud of all the hard work they’ve put into preparing for the USBC and know that they’ll represent both the shop and our city well.  There are actually no other competitors coming from between Atlanta and Jersey City, NJ, this year so they are representing more than just DC but our entire region of the country.
