Our experience:
Ryan Jensen has over eight years of experience in the specialty coffee industry, beginning as a part-time barista while in college in Missoula, MT. After moving to Washington, DC, in early 2003, he began working at murky coffee as a barista, manager and, eventually, general manager before, during and after attending the Graduate Institute at St. John’s College in Annapolis, MD. After leaving murky coffee in late 2006, Ryan spent a year and a half as the DC Customer Relations Representative for Counter Culture Coffee, a wholesale coffee roaster based out of Durham, NC.
Awards and accomplishments include winning the 2005 Southeast Regional Barista Competition, competing in the 2005 United States Barista Championship, serving as a member of the USBC Committee from 2006 to the present, and judging at the USBC the past three years. Also, Ryan traveled to Costa Rica in fall 2007 to appear on Buen Dia, a nationally televised morning show, and to lead a workshop in latte art for baristas participating in the certification program at Costa Rica’s Instituto del Café. He has also trained baristas at many of the top cafes and restaurants throughout the Mid-Atlantic region as well as at the Culinary Institute of America in Hyde Park, NY.
Jill Jensen began working at a bakery & café in Oxford, Ohio in 1999. She came to Washington, DC in 2001 to participate in the Americorps NCCC program. Jill then worked at Common Grounds Coffee & Tea in Arlington, VA before serving as an Americorps VISTA at the Southeast White House in DC. Currently Jill works as the Director of Administration at the Mustard Seed Foundation in Falls Church, VA. She has a degree in Marketing from the Miami University (Ohio) and has recently sharpened her barista skills at Big Bear Café in DC.

Hey Ryan,
I think it’s awesome (and probably a little scary) that you are opening your own place. I read the article in the Washington City Paper and I think it’s sweet that you can’t bear to part with it because of your beginnings with you wife
Let me know if there is anything I can help you with (even though I’m all the way out here in KS) or if you would ever consider using any PT’s Coffee at your store. I know you are CC through and through, but I can send y ou some stuff if you are ever interested
Just let me know…
God bless on this endeavor!

Congratulations on your new adventure. I am so excited for you guys. I wish I was living closer so I could come and celebrate with you on your grand opening. Maybe you could come open a coffee shop in Seattle someday.
. You guys will be in my prayers as you set out.

Ryan,
Glad to have met you today at the Counter Culture cupping. Enjoyed our brief chat, and I look forward to stopping by when you’ve opened. I’ll be sure to spread the word in the homeroaster community.

I know I’m a little late with this, but it’s better late than never:
I’m super excited about your shop opening this summer! Although I’m no longer in the DC area, I will certainly make a special trip to Eastern Market once you open
Best of luck with the construction and the putting-together-ness of the store!

Wow, I can’t wait for you guys to open! As a fellow Miami of Ohio grad and barista it’s exciting to see a little bit of home find its way to DC. Best of luck!

I was so sad to lose murky on the hill — but happy to see this opening in its space! I can’t wait to try the coffee!

I wish you the best of luck w/ your business. I’m hoping you’ll be selling fresh beans (CC I assume) and offer some educational efforts (e.g. cuppings, barrista training) to promote that promotes an educated customer base.

Send me an email sometime–I’d love to hear more about your life! And I could fill you in a little more on mine!

Coffee is fantastic. Great to see we have a high-caliber coffee shop back on the Hill. The baked goods have room for improvement, though, I have to admit…
Best,
Rich

Ryan and Jill, I think it was Christmas when I saw you both last, but I just wanted to say congratulations on the new shop! I hope to stop by and see you and the new digs soon.
(PS-artisan bread in five minutes a day is the greatest recipe book in my collection. it was on your living room floor that I first heard about it and I’ve been hooked ever since!)

Just spent about a week on the hill with relatives and loved your place. Stopped there every day.

Thank you so much to Randy! We stopped by today and had one of our best coffee experiences yet (and coming from Seattle, this is a true compliment!). Tried the Finca El Puente as well as the espresso – I have forgotten which it was unfortunately. And, thanks to the generosity of Randy we have Misty Valley for the road! Woo hoo! Deepest regards Peregrine, we look forward to visiting you again soon.
